Inter Milan wingback Robin Gosens makes no secret of the fact that he’s back in the picture for Germany after missing the World Cup.
Speaking to German broadcaster ARD, via FCInterNews, the German gave his thoughts on what being called up again represents.
Gosens has been part of the Germany squad that’s played in recent friendlies.
The former Atalanta star came off the bench in Die Mannschaft’s disappointing 0-1 loss to Poland in a friendly match. It may be an inauspicious return, but it’s still an important one for Gosens.
When he was an Atalanta player, Gosens had earned a place as a key figure on his national team’s left flank. He had been one of Die Mannschaft’s real star players at EURO 2020.
A move to Inter followed in January of 2021.
However, injury problems meant that Gosens’s form stalled in his first twelve months as a Nerazzurri player.
Moreover, the German found himself behind Ivan Perisic in the pecking order when he arrived. Then, during the campaign just gone, it was Federico Dimarco who replaced Perisic as first-choice at left-wingback rather than Gosens.
This lack of playing time and form led to Gosens being excluded from Germany’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar.
The 28-year-old admitted that this came as a huge disappointment, the biggest of his career.
However, there have been plenty of positive signs since then in terms of Gosens’s form. So much so, in fact, that he is back in the picture for Germany.
Inter Star Gosens Admits He’s Happy To Be Back For Germany
“I’m super happy to be back with the national team,” Inter wingback Gosens said.
“Obviously on a personal level,” he noted. “But also for the team and the country.”
“I was hoping for a win that would bring optimism.”
“Anyway, as far as my performance is concerned, I think I made a good start today,” Gosens said. “Even if I’m not satisfied with the final result given everything we did.”
Gosens made clear that “The situation is very serious, we know it.”
“We need to get wins that will make the whole country support us,” he noted.
“Next year we’ll be hosting the Euros, and it needs to be a big festival of football,” the 28-year-old observed. “And that can only be possible if we start getting results.”
