Edin Dzeko has revealed that Fenerbahce had already tried to sign him in 2021 before Inter Milan won the race for his signature.

Speaking whilst at Fenerbahce’s training camp, as reported by FCInterNews, the Bosnian noted that he was on the Istanbul giants’ radar for some time before he actually joined them this summer.

This summer, former Roma and Manchester City striker Dzeko left Inter on a free transfer to join Fenerbahce.

Whilst the Nerazzurri had offered the 37-year-old a contract extension, he declined in the end. Instead, Dzeko has headed to Fenerbahce, signing a two-year deal with the Turkish Super Lig team.

However, Dzeko leaves Inter having made his mark at the club. In two years of service, the Bosnian helped Inter to win both the Supercoppa Italiana and the Coppa Italia back to back.

The former City striker also played an important role in Inter reaching the Champions League final last season. His final match in an Inter shirt came against his old team in the final.

The player has revealed that, had things gone a bit differently, he could have been at Fenerbahce already and not played at Inter for two seasons.

“My first meeting with Fenerbahce dates back all the way to two years ago,” the striker noted.

“We talked and had a good conversation, I was impressed by the club.”

“But at that moment I had almost reached an agreement with Inter, so nothing more came of it, it was too late then,” he added.

Dzeko noted that “This time around everything happened very quickly. The club approached me saying they want to win the league again for the first time in many years, which a club like this shouldn’t go without.”

He added that “I’m very motivated, it’s a new challenge for me and this club deserves the best.”
