Legendary ex-Inter Milan President Massimo Moratti believes that striker Romelu Lukaku “betrayed” Inter by negotiating with Juventus.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Radio Kiss Kiss, via FCInterNews, the former Nerazzurri President weighed in on the controversy surrounding Lukaku and Inter this summer.

The abrupt end to Inter’s pursuit of Lukaku this summer shocked many.

The player and club had seemed to enjoy a close connection. This was certainly the case when the Belgian did everything he could to make a return on loan from Chelsea last summer.

Lukaku seemed to be approaching this summer in a similar manner. He seemed ready to hold out for a return to the Nerazzurri, and wasn’t interested in other clubs.

So naturally, the revelation that the 30-year-old had not only been negotiating with Inter’s bitter rivals behind their backs, but was reportedly even avoiding calls from the Nerazzurri after they found an agreement with Chelsea, came as a surprise to say the least.

Lukaku’s antics caused outrage within the club. The Nerazzurri wasted no time in pulling the plug on talks and turning their back on the Belgian.

And the situation also drew harsh condemnation from Inter’s ultras group the Curva Nord.

For his part, former Nerazzurri President Moratti understands the feeling. In his view, Lukaku’s behaviour was nothing less than a “betrayal.”

Of Lukaku’s situation, Moratti said that “It’s fine that players want to make the most of their short careers financially.”

“But to betray a club like that which you’ve enjoyed such a good relationship with doesn’t leave a good impression,” he added.

And, regarding Inter’s summer transfer business, Moratti said that “Before the start of the season, there are always some illusions.”

“But then we have to wait and see which new signings surprise us with their performances,” he continued.

Moratti noted that “Right now the lack of a goalkeeper is a worry.”

“And then in attack, there’s one player who eliminated himself from the running which will weigh heavily on the team,” he said referring to Lukaku.
