Inter Milan are growing more and more impatient in their quest to sign goalkeeper Yann Sommer from Bayern Munich.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Nerazzurri want to finally wrap up a deal for the 34-year-old within the next 48 hours, and could simply trigger his release clause to do so.
Inter have been pushing to sign Sommer for several weeks now.
The Nerazzurri have lined the Swiss international up as the replacement for Andre Onana since completing the sale of the Cameroonian to Manchester United.
Reports suggest that Inter’s plan is to sign Sommer as a short-term solution. The former Borussia Monchengladbach man could be the starter for a couple of seasons.
Then, the Nerazzurri would aim to also sign a younger keeper like Shakhtar Donetsk’s Anatoliy Trubin. That player would be the candidate to inherit the starting role in the longer term.
For weeks, the situation with Trubin has been more or less stagnant, though. And Inter are now aiming to change that.
Inter Milan Want To Finally Make Breakthrough To Sign Yann Sommer
As the Gazzetta note, Inter have seemingly wanted to wrap up a deal in a timeframe of “48 hours” or so for some time now.
The agreement with Bayern has never really been a problem. The Bavarians are willing to sell Sommer to the Nerazzurri, but only after securing a replacement.
Inter have therefore been patient as Bayern have looked for a new goalkeeper.
However, the Nerazzurri have had to wait far longer than they’d hoped, due to the long process that the Germans’ search has become.
Inter have not yet triggered the €6 million release clause in Sommer’s contract.
Partly this is because they hope to secure a lower fee of €4-5 million. And partly this is due to the Nerazurri not having wanted to sour relations with Bayern by going over their heads to trigger the clause.
However, time is starting to get tight.
Inter are impatient due to how long they’ve had to go without a starting-quality keeper in their squad.
Now, the Gazzetta report, Inter are ready to do one of two things.
Firstly, they could simply trigger the release clause in Sommer’s contract with Bayern. This would mean that a deal for the 34-year-old can get over the line fairly quickly.
On the other hand, the Nerazzurri could take another tack – they could give up and move on to a different target.
