Midfielder Roberto Gagliardini received boos from Inter Milan fans on his return to the San Siro with his new team Monza.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Nerazzurri faithful did not hide their negative feelings towards the 29-year-old, who had a very mixed spell as an Inter player.

Gagliardini spent six and a half years wearing the Inter shirt.

The Italian international joined the Nerazzurri from Atalanta during the January transfer window in 2017.

There were high expectations for Gagliardini when he first arrived – his performances for Atalanta had shown that he can give plenty in the midfield battle.

And in his first few seasons at Inter, the Italian was a regular in the team.

But over the last couple of years at the Nerazzurri in particular, Gagliardini’s standard of performance seemed to decline. The 29-year-old looked lower and lower on confidence, and drew the ire of fans for misplaced simple passes, lunging tackles, and the like.

Gagliardini’s time at Inter ended on something of a low note.

The 29-year-old was given a red card for two yellow card challenges in an away match against Napoli in May. In truth, he had probably made three or four tackles worthy of a booking in that match.

San Siro Boos Roberto Gagliardini During Inter – Monza Clash

The one-match suspension after that match against Napoli meant that Gagliardini never wore an Inter shirt at the San Siro again.

This meant that the Nerazzurri faithful never really gave the midfielder a proper sendoff. Exactly what kind of a goodbye he would have received is up for debate.

But yesterday evening, Gagliardini was back at his old stomping grounds.

Over the summer, the Azzurri midfielder decided to join Monza. He left Inter when his contract expired and joined the Brianzoli on a free transfer.

Monza were not the only team who made Gagliardini an offer over the summer.

However, the player always said that his priority was to join a team where he would start matches regularly.

Gagliardini never made a secret of the fact that he was unhappy with a role as nothing more than a backup at Inter.

So the 29-year-old joined Monza this summer. He did so alongside another former Inter player who left at the end of his Nerazzurri contract – veteran defender Danilo D’Ambrosio.

Both Gagliardini and D’Ambrosio received commemorative shirts before the match. The numbers on the backs indicated their respective numbers of appearances for the Nerazzurri.

But the receptions from the crowd that the two ex-Inter players received were markedly different.

In the case of D’Ambrosio, it was a warm reception. The 34-year-old’s parting this summer was amicable, and the fans still had fond memories of his time at the club.

On the other hand, the reaction to Gagliardini was not positive.

There were few cheers for a player who had never really won over the fans at Inter. Particularly in a difficult final couple seasons at the club.

And during the match as well, boos were audible at times when Gagliardini was on the ball.

The 29-year-old never really got his sendoff from the San Siro. But yesterday evening, he got the message regarding how the fans felt.
