Alessandro Bastoni has earned praise for his performance in Inter Milan’s Serie A opening day win over Monza on Saturday.

As Italian news outlet L’Interista note, the player ratings for the match tagged the 24-year-old as the “perfect modern defender” for what he showed in the Nerazzurri’s backline throughout their first league match of the season.

Bastoni has become a familiar face on the left side of Inter’s backline.

The former Atalanta and Parma defender is a key player for the Nerazzurri both in and out of possession.

And on Saturday evening, Bastoni showed exactly why that’s the case.

The Italian international has a clear understanding of his role in the team by this stage. And against Monza, he rarely put a foot wrong.

Out of possession, Bastoni was tasked with patrolling Inter’s left-hand channel, and he put in some importance interventions.

The 24-year-old’s timing, technique, and physical strength allowed him to hold up Brianzoli attackers without too much trouble.

And in possession, Bastoni was able to really shine.

It is no longer much of a surprise when the Azzurri star ventures up the pitch or delivers ambitious passes. And that is exactly what he did all evening against the Brianzoli.

Bastoni enjoyed a strong linkup with wingback Federico Dimarco and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

This meant that whenever he won the ball back, the Italian was always quick to find an option to try and initiate a counterattack.

Bastoni saw out the ninety minutes and helped Inter to an opening day clean sheet.

All of Tuttosport, the Gazzetta dello Sport, the Corriere dello Sport, and TuttoMercatoWeb found Bastoni’s performance to be worthy of a score of 6.5/10.

Meanwhile. L’Interista awarded the 24-year-old with an even better score, going as high as 7/10 for his performance.
