Lautaro Martinez showed that he can “take the attack on his shoulders” for Inter Milan with his performance against Monza.

Italian news outlet L’Interista note that the Argentine won praise for not just his match-winning brace, but also his all-around performance in the Nerazzurri’s Serie A opener on Saturday.

Inter’s squad have seen a lot of comings and goings this summer.

That has certainly been the case in attack. Edin Dzeko and Romelu Lukaku are gone, whilst Marcus Thuram and Marko Arnautovic have replaced them.

Both Thuram and Arnautovic got the chance to make their case to become one half of the Nerazzurri’s first-choice strike pair on Saturday.

But there’s no question about who the other half will be this season.

Thuram showed plenty of sparks on Saturday. However, the Frenchman failed to score, and didn’t look incisive in front of goal at this stage.

Meanwhile, there are some questions about how 34-year-old Arnautovic will adjust after two seasons at Bologna.

Compared to reliable scorers like Dzeko and Lukaku, the new pair haven’t yet proven themselves.

That naturally means that the pressure is on Martinez to score more than ever.

And despite the fact that he has been Inter’s top scorers in each of the last two seasons, the Argentine has developed a reputation as something of a streaky scorer, who goes through intermittent goal droughts.

On Saturday, however, Martinez showed no signs of trouble in front of goal.

The 25-year-old was clinical with the chances that he did have. Inter’s new captain didn’t lose his composure and deployed the right technical finishes when the ball fell to him in front of goal.

There were also other important attributes to Martinez’s display – his defensive workrate, solid linkup play.

But this season, with a lot of upheaval in attack, the Argentine’s eye for goal may be the most crucial thing of all for this Inter team.
