The fitness of Inter Milan defenders Matteo Darmian and Francesco Acerbi is still being evaluated for Monday’s Serie A match against Cagliari.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

In Inter’s Serie A opener against Monza last week, Acerbi was absent due to a calf problem.

Stefan de Vrij started the match in the 35-year-old’s absence.

Now, the question is whether Acerbi will be able to return to fitness in time to play in Inter’s second league match of the season.

There is not necessarily a rush given that de Vrij remains available to start in the centre of the Nerazzurri’s back three.

However, Simone Inzaghi will want the stalwart former Lazio and Sassuolo defender back at his disposal before too long.

At the moment, the Gazzetta reports, the availability of Acerbi remains a doubt.

The Italian international is getting close to fully recovering from his calf problem. However, it is not yet certain whether or not he will be able to get match-fit in time for Monday’s match away in Sardinia.

Therefore, with the team having returned to training yesterday, Acerbi is under evaluation.

Darmian A Doubt In Addition To Acerbi For Inter Milan Vs Cagliari

According to the Gazzetta, Acerbi isn’t the only Inter player whose fitness could be in doubt against Cagliari.

Fellow defender Darmian is also currently dealing with a minor injury.

The 33-year-old had started for Inter against Monza. And he saw out the majority of the match.

However, Darmian came off late in that match against the Brianzoli. Yann Bisseck replaced him on the right side of the defense.

Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi confirmed afterwards that the reason for Darmian’s removal was a minor ankle problem.

And according to Sky, Inter are evaluating Darmian’s condition in training.
