Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram was “like a mix between Romelu Lukaku and Edin Dzeko” in his appearance against Cagliari.

This is the verdict in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who praise the Frenchman for knitting together the Nerazzurri’s attack despite criticizing him for a lack of teeth in front of goal.

The wait goes on for Thuram to score his first goal in an Inter shirt.

The former Borussia Monchengladbach and Guingamp striker failed to find the back of the net in preseason. And despite starting both of Inter’s Serie A matches so far, he has not yet done so.

However, the Gazzetta argues, the 26-year-old has done just about everything but score.

This includes an excellent assist for Denzel Dumfries’s opening goal in yesterday’s 2-0 Serie A win over the Rossoblu.

Marcus Thuram “Mix Between Lukaku & Dzeko” For Inter

So far this season Inter have not lacked for goals.

Captain Lautaro Martinez has picked up where he left off in each of the last two seasons – the Argentine has scored three out of the Nerazzurri’s four goals in Serie A so far.

Meanwhile, Dumfries popped up with the crucial opener yesterday evening in Sardinia.

Between Martinez’s increasing ruthlessness in Serie A week-to-week, and the ability of midfielders and wingbacks to pop up with goals, the pressure on Thuram to be a constant goal threat is not overwhelming.

Sooner or later, as a forward, the Frenchman will have to demonstrate that he knows where the goal is.

But for now, the Gazzetta suggests, Thuram is showing that he fits into this Inter team and provides what it needs.

Like Lukaku, the Frenchman isn’t afraid to use his pace and dribbling ability to attack the opposition defensive line.

And like Dzeko, Thuram looks very comfortable roaming around the pitch to get on the ball.

The Bosnian’s technical ability when dropping deeper and creating overloads had been a key part of Inter’s style of play under Simone Inzaghi up to this point. Therefore, Thuram’s ability to replicate it looks very promising.

It is no surprise that Dumfries not only directly assisted Dumfries’s opener, but also played a big role in Martinez’s second.

Even just in terms of a direct link-up with Martinez, Thuram clearly had an understanding with the Argentine.

Sooner or later, the goals will have to arrive.

But for now, Thuram is proving that all the other vital aspects are there. The losses of Lukaku and Dzeko threatened to destabilize Inter on a structural level, but the Frenchman has prevented that.
