Goalkeeper Yann Sommer is making sure that Inter Milan don’t feel too much regret at having sold Andre Onana to Man United this summer.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Former Ajax goalkeeper Onana was the player who Inter decided to cash in on in a big money sale this summer.

The Nerazzurri needed to bring in cash in order to fund signings during the transfer window. And circumstances lined up so that the Cameroonian was the player to make way.

Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag wanted to bring the 27-year-old in as a key part of his project. Ten Hag and Onana had already worked together for several seasons at Ajax.

And Inter were able to collect a significant transfer fee for a player they had signed for nothing.

United paid the Nerazzurri around €52.5 million plus add-ons to sign Onana.

That was certainly a vital cash influx for Inter. But there was also a sense that Onana would be a very difficult player for the club to replace.

The Cameroonian had certainly been crucial to the Nerazzurri’s buildup play given his ability with the ball at his feet.

And in the Champions League, Onana’s saves were crucial. There is even a sense that the Nerazzurri would have struggled to reach the final of that competition had it not been for some vital interventions from their goalkeeper.

Yann Sommer Making Sure Inter Don’t Regret Onana Decision

After selling Onana, Inter’s strategy to replace the 27-year-old was to go for an experienced option.

34-year-old Sommer may not be a player for the long term.

However, the Swiss international and former Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayern Munich veteran arrived with a reputation as one of Europe’s more consistent goalkeepers from the last decade.

And so far, Sommer has lived up to that reputation.

In Serie A, the Swiss only conceded for the first time four matches into the season. And there was little that Sommer could’ve done to prevent Rafal Leao’s goal in the Milan derby.

And, like Onana, Sommer is really having his say in the Champions League.

The 34-year-old was one of the only Inter players who covered himself in glory against Real Sociedad on Wednesday.

There would have been little chance of the Nerazzurri snatching a point from that match had it not been for some outstanding saves by Sommer.

So for Inter, there is little regret at cashing in on Onana. At least for the time being.

Meanwhile for Onana, things have not quite gone according to plan at Old Trafford.

On the one hand, the Cameroonian’s ability with the ball at his feet has given United a different dimension in buildup play.

But in terms of his shot-stopping, Onana has been a far cry from his Champions League heroics at Inter.

Some individual errors by the 27-year-old have been a big factor in the Red Devils’ leaky defense at the start of the campaign.
