Benfica hate the Inter Milan chant “For all the kilometres I’ve travelled for you” after another Champions League defeat.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica, as reported via FCInter1908. During yesterday’s Champions League group stage win over Benfica, Inter fans broke out into a very familiar song.

The fans sang, “And for all the people who, love only you, for all the kilometers I’ve travelled for you, Internazionale you must win.”

This chant became an iconic part of Inter’s run to last season’s Champions League final. After reaching the Champions League final, world renowned opera tenor Andrea Bocelli, recorded it on the piano. This was shared by Inter Milan on Instagram.

And an important step along the way in that run was the Nerazzurri’s win over Benfica in the quarterfinals of the competition. Inter beat the Lisbon giants 2-0 at the Estadio da Luz before seeing out the tie in a wild 3-3 draw at the San Siro.

And that tie naturally left its scars on the psyche of the Benfica fanbase.

Therefore, the Portuguese champions will not have been entirely happy to resume hostilities with Inter in this season’s group stage. On the one hand, the group stage draw did give Benfica the opportunity to get some revenge on Inter.

But that’s not how it panned out.

Benfica “Hate The Sound Of” Inter Milan Song After Another Champions League Defeat

La Repubblica relate the story of a Benfica “match analyst” who was at yesterday evening’s match at the stadium. The employee of the Portuguese club was there to observe the match.

While he’ll have hoped that the result could have been a different one, it was the same as last season. Inter produced some of their best football to beat the Lisbon side.

The 1-0 scoreline didn’t really do justice to the degree of their dominance, or the intensity of their performance. Perhaps this has led to a sense in Lisbon that the Nerazzurri are specifically reserving their energy and their best displays for Benfica.

La Repubblica write that the Benfica match analyst made a dour remark whilst queuing up at a coffee bar at the San Siro after the match. Hearing the stadium singing the “All the kilometers” song, he lamented, “You have no idea how much we hate that song in Lisbon!”

The Benfica fans had to hear it last season. And they won’t have relished hearing it again. In fact, Inter had also gotten an iconic win over Benfica in the 1965 European Cup final.

So, La Repubblica relate, the Benfica match analyst admitted that for fans and employees of the club, there is a sense that the Nerazzurri are the last team they ever want to face.
