Icy Reception For Romelu Lukaku From Former Inter Milan Teammates In Serie A Clash

Roma striker Romelu Lukaku got an icy reception from his former Inter Milan teammates in yesterday’s Serie A match.

Today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, report that four Nerazzurri players in particular chose to snub the Belgian.

Lukaku’s controversial break with Inter during the summer transfer window didn’t just affect the club or the fans.

There was also the matter of the 30-year-old’s fraying relationships with former teammates.

Lukaku had always seemed to get along well with the rest of the Inter squad during his time with the club.

When the Belgian pushed got a loan move back from Chelsea last summer, there was no shortage of positive energy and joking around as he reunited with Nerazzurri teammates.

Therefore, the mood in the dressing room was hardly positive after Lukaku’s antics last summer.

The Belgian didn’t just secretly negotiate with Juventus and AC Milan. He was also refusing to answer phone calls from Inter players who were also his personal friends.

One player who Lukaku had once enjoyed a positive relationship with was Inter captain Lautaro Martinez.

The pair had formed a very well-oiled strike partnership. But beyond that, they also by all accounts enjoyed a good relationship off the pitch.

But Martinez was one of the players who Lukaku would not answer phone calls from during the summer.

And that was enough for the Argentine to coldly rebuff his former strike partner’s embrace at the start of yesterday’s match.

And it was the same story from three Italian internationals who form part of the core of Inter’s squad.

The Gazzetta report that all of Nicolo Barella, Federico Dimarco, and Alessandro Bastoni completely avoided Lukaku.

Clearly, the sense of hurt feelings and anger with the Belgian remain.

And so players who had once played an important role in welcoming Lukaku to Inter avoided any awkward interactions.

This made clear just how much Inter as a whole have chosen to reject the Begian after this summer.
