Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez has placed 20th in the Ballon D’Or voting, whilst midfielder Nicolo Barella is seven spots behind him.

This is revealed by the official FIFA list of the Ballon D’Or voting, via FCInterNews.

Two Inter players were on the official thirty-player shortlist for the men’s Ballon D’Or this year.

One was captain and striker Martinez. The other was midfielder Barella.

It is not as though either of the pair had been expected to win the award or place in the upper reaches of the voting.

However, both had earned their spots on the list with their performances for the Nerazzurri, and in Martinez’s case, for the Argentine national team,

For Nerazzurri captain Martinez, it has been a very memorable twelve months.

Last season, the 26-year-old enjoyed arguably his best season yet in an Inter shirt.

Martinez was the Nerazzurri’s top scorer for the second season running. And he helped the team reach the Champions League final, which they lost to Manchester City.

Then during the summer, Martinez inherited the captain’s armband at Inter from Samir Handandovic.

This was a reflection of the Argentine’s quality on the pitch as well as his loyalty and leadership off of it.

Martinez has responded by scoring an eye-watering twelve goals between Serie A and the Champions League at the start of this season.

This puts the Argentine well in front in the race to finish the season as the Italian top flight’s top scorer.

And last winter, Martinez helped Argentine win the FIFA World Cup.

The Inter striker lost his places in the starting eleven for the Albiceleste after group stage matches against Saudi Arabia and Mexico.

However, Martinez still -made his contribution in appearances from the bench. This included the decisive penalty in a shootout against the Netherlands.

Martinez is rewarded for his outstanding year with a 20th place finish.

Meanwhile, midfielder Barella did not have a great year with the Italian national team. The Azzurri failed to qualify for the World Cup.

However, with Inter the 26-year-old went from strength to strength.

Barella was hugely important to the Nerazzurri’s run to the Champions League final.

The Italian international particularly had a brilliant tie against Benfica in the quarterfinals of that competition.

Barella finishes seven places below Martinez in Ballon D’Or voting. He is in 27th place.
