Italian media are calling Sunday’s loss to Inter Milan the “worst match in a Roma shirt” for striker Romelu Lukaku so far.

Today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, do not spare the Belgian in their assessment of Sunday’s display.

Lukaku arrived at Roma with significant expectations on his shoulders in the last days of the summer transfer window.

Beyond all the controversy, there is little denying the 30-year-old’s quality.

Lukaku more than proved that he can make a decisive impact in Serie A matches during his time at Inter.

And the Giallorossi needed exactly that.

With Tammy Abraham out with a lengthy injury, Roma have needed a match-winning presence in attack.

And the fact that Paulo Dybala has missed a chunk of time with injury has meant that Lukaku has become all the more important for the Giallorossi.

Inter Loss “Worst Match In A Roma Shirt” For Romelu Lukaku

Prior to Sunday’s match, Lukaku had lived up to the billing at Roma.

The former Manchester United, Chelsea, and Everton striker had found the back of the net five times in Serie A, making him the Giallorossi’s top scorer thus far in the season.

And Lukaku has also scored three in three in the Europa League.

Clearly, no one would deny that Lukaku has done what Roma signed him to do.

The arrival of the Belgian has been decisive to the club from the Italian capital getting past some poor early form to climb up the table.

But against Inter, that all came to a screeching halt.

The return of Lukaku to the San Siro had been a major subplot.

If any player was going to make the difference in Roma’s favour, it was going to be Lukaku. And had he done so, it would have had the feel of a player truly coming back to haunt Inter.

But instead, the 30-year-old cut an anonymous figure.

Lukaku was not exactly helped by the fact that Roma as a whole struggled to get the ball to him.

But it was also not exactly an individual display to remember from the Belgian.

Lukaku was unable to really force the issue. He seemed to play within himself physically, losing his battle with Francesco Acerbi.

Prior to Sunday, Lukaku had impressed in a Roma shirt.

But against his old club, he was decidedly unable to.
