Inter Milan defender Matteo Darmian believes that the team have learned from the errors that cost them last season.

The 33-year-old spoke to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia after the Nerazzurri’s 2-1 Serie A win over Atalanta, via FCInterNews.

There were certainly plenty of positives for Inter last season.

The Nerazzurri won the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana. And most impressively of all, they reached the Champions League final.

But none of this can mask the fact that in the league, Inter were nowhere near good enough.

There were some good performances and periods of form.

But these always came to a grinding halt with some bad result or other.

Particular in matches against the “smaller” teams, switch-offs and lapses in attention or motivation cost Inter dearly.

And this time around, there have been a couple tough matches in which Inter have dropped points. They lost to Sassuolo and drew against Bologna.

But these have been much more blips, whilst the overall trend early this campaign has been positive.

Inter Defender Matteo Darmian Believes Last Season’s Mistakes Were A Lesson

After beating Atalanta, Darmian remarked that “These three points give us a lot of awareness, self-belief.”

“We’ve dropped a few points so far,” he noted. “But we’ve always reasoned our way out of it, step by step.”

“I don’t know if something happened, but we learned from last season’s mistakes,” he added.

“We lost so many matches and dropped so many points. When you play for Inter, that’s bad.”

“This season we started in the best way possible,” the defender added.

“Our journey in the Champions League has given us awareness and self-belief.”

And of the team spirit this season, Darmian noted that “At the base of everything there has to be a solid group. And we have that.”

“We also know how to joke around together,” he added. “And I think that shows through on the pitch.”
