Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez has a goalscoring record of Fiorentina legend Gabriel Batistuta in his sights against Frosinone.

Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, note that Martinez can equal or even surpass his countryman’s record for the most goals scored in the first twelve matches of a Serie A by a foreign player.

Inter have played eleven matches in the league so far this season.

And with his strike against Atalanta last weekend, Nerazzurri captain Martinez has taken his total to twelve.

That is, of course, a record better than a goal per game for the 26-year-old.

And in all competitions, it’s fourteen goals for Martinez. The Argentine has scored against both Real Sociedad and Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League.

Lautaro Martinez Chasing Down Gabriel Batistuta Record

Martinez has already finished each of the past two seasons as Inter’s top scorer.

And now it looks virtually certain that the 26-year-old will make it three in a row.

Moreover, Martinez is currently the hot favourite to be the Serie A top scorer.

The Argentine has not yet been capocannoniere in his career. But he is currently well in front in the Italian top flight’s scoring charts.

And already, Martinez can look at historical records.

The Argentine has every chance of scoring against Frosinone in this evening’s match.

Martinez has already done so. He opened the scoring in a 3-0 win during the 2018-19 season, with Keita Balde scoring the other two.

And if Martinez does score and makes it thirteen in the league for the campaign, that will be the same total that Batistuta managed for Fiorentina in the first twelve matches of the 1994-95 season.

If Martinez were to score a brace or more, though, he would be alone in front.

No foreign player has scored fourteen goals in the first twelve matches of a Serie A season before.
