Inter Milan captain put in a good shift to help his team against Frosinone yesterday, but there were no fireworks in front of goal.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.
The sight of Nerazzurri captain Martinez is certainly one that Serie A defenders have come to fear.
So far this season, the 26-year-old has found the back of the net twelve times in the Italian top flight.
This puts Martinez way out in front in the scoring charts.
As such, the Argentine will surely have at least one eye on the prospect of finishing the season as Serie A’s top scorer, something he has never done before.
And therefore, each match is an opportunity to build on that advantage, keeping other top strikers like Olivier Giroud, Victor Osimhen, and his old strike partner Romelu Lukaku at bay.
But yesterday evening, Martinez had no luck.
Lautaro Martinez Supports The Team But Fails To Fire In Front Of Goal Vs Frosinone
Martinez’s best chance to keep his excellent goalscoring season going came early on in yesterday’s match.
Nicolo Barella worked the ball to the Argentine, who got off a first-time effort.
It was struck with the kind of pace and accuracy that would be expected from the Inter captain.
But Giallazzurri keeper Stefano Turati proved to be equal to it. The 22-year-old produced a very good save to tip Martinez’s effort over the crossbar.
After that, Martinez was not exactly battering the Frosinone goal with shots.
It was a difficult match for Inter, who were not providing their strikers with an enormous amount of service.
And whilst Martinez can sometimes turn even the slightest of openings into a goal, there was no magic from the captain this time around.
Rather, it was wingback Federico Dimarco who produced the moment of genius that Inter needed to unlock the match.
Then came a penalty, which Marcus Thuram won and Hakan Calhanoglu.
It will have pleased Inter coach Simone Inzaghi to see that Inter can get the job done even when his talisman is not scoring.
And Martinez did still show what he offers apart from goals. It was a typically battling performance from the Argentine.
But in terms of his impressive exploits in front of goal this season, Martinez hit the pause button.
