Inter Milan wingback Carlos Augusto feels that the Nerazzurri showed their strength as a collective to stage their comeback against Benfica.

The 24-year-old gave his reaction to the 3-3 Champions League thriller to ITV, via FCInterNews.

The way that the first half at the Estadio da Luz will not have been easy on Inter mentally.

The Nerazzurri were under pressure right from the first half. And this caused the team to all but collapse.

The result was a Joao Mario hattrick.

The fact that all of Benfica’s goals arrived from a former Inter player added insult to injury.

But the bottom line was that Inter were in a very difficult situation at halftime.

There were no substitutions for the start of the second half.

But the Nerazzurri certainly came out looking like a different team.

The changes were to the team’s attitude and approach.

Playing without fear, Inter pushed for goals. Even if erasing the deficit by scoring three goals without surprise didn’t look probable, the team would at least give it a go.

And in the end, this allowed Inter to come back into the match and take a result.

In the view of Brazilian international wingback Augusto, this was the result of the Nerazzurri having a strong sense of unity about them.

Inter Wingback Carlos Augusto: Strong Group On Show Vs Benfica

“In the first half we didn’t enter the game,” Augusto said after the match.

“We have a great group,” he continued.

“We have a strong team and the squad rotation can’t be an excuse for us with the first half the we had.”

Augusto noted that “At halftime we talked to each other.”

“Then we came back on the pitch with the right mentality. And we played a great match.”

The Brazilian diagnosed the initial problem that Inter had as “Mental.”

“There were a lot of changes to the team. But we’re in good form, so that can’t be an excuse.”

“It was a mental issue, which we then fixed in the second half.”
