Legendary Italian manager Fabio Capello was left baffled by the approach of Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi against Real Sociedad.

In the final Champions League group-stage fixture, the Nerazzurri needed a victory over the Spaniards to secure the top spot. This would have theoretically guaranteed the club a more favorable draw in the Round of 16.

Nevertheless, Inzaghi opted to rotate his starting line-up.

The 47-year-old’s most controversial choice was dropping club captain Lautaro Martinez in favor of Alex Sanchez. The Argentine only took the pitch in the 65th minute.

In the end, the match finished in a stalemate that saw the Nerazzurri finish second in the group. They now risk facing the likes of Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Arsenal in the next phase of the competition.

Fabio Capello Perplexed By The Choices Of Inter Milan Coach Simone Inzaghi Vs Real Sociedad

Hence, Capello criticizes Inzaghi for his rotation policy, arguing that the latter should have fielded his strongest line-up against the Spanish club.

“Juventus is in the Scudetto race despite the forwards not offering encouraging signs in front of goal. However, it’s the opposite for Inter, at least if we’re talking exclusively about Serie A,” said the former England and Real Madrid manager in his interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport via FcInterNews.

“In Europe, however, I didn’t understand Simone Inzaghi. The match against Real Sociedad was fundamental to put (on paper obviously) the Nerazzurri on less dangerous tracks in the Champions League round of 16.

“But instead, Lautaro is on the bench for more than an hour. Wasn’t it better to spare the Argentine the second half against Udinese, when they were already 3-0 up?

“Now comes the away match at Lazio, which has been indigestible for Inzaghi in the last two years as he’s a former Biancocelesti player and coach.”
