Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi relishes his team’s next challenge in the UEFA Champions League while dreaming of another glorious campaign.

Monday’s Round of 16 draw pitted the Nerazzurri against Atletico Madrid.

This will be a stern test for the Serie A leaders as they will take on a side that has been making regular appearances at this stage of the competition for the past decade.

The Colchoneros never won the trophy but came extremely close on two occasions. They eventually ended up succumbing at the hands of their crosstown rivals Real Madrid in the finals of 2014 and 2016.

On the other hand, Inter won the Champions League thrice, but their most recent finale ended in a heartbreak.

Inzaghi is now dreaming of replicating last season’s journey to the final, even though it will be a daunting test, beginning with the double encounter against Atletico Madrid.

“It will be a great round of 16, with two top-level teams playing at two beautiful stadiums with passionate fans in attendance,” said the Inter coach in his interview with the club’s official channels via FcInterNews.

“We are happy to continue to face such important matches in Europe constantly.

“Atletico have played two finals in the last ten years and have great roots in this competition. But our club is no different and we want to try to dream again and give some joy to our fans.”

Inzaghi also spoke highly of Atletico manager Diego Simeone who was once his teammate at Lazio. He reveals that the two men share an amicable rapport.

“Diego Simeone is a great coach with whom I have an excellent relationship. I won a lot with him, including a Scudetto with Lazio.

“Now let’s focus on our upcoming matches. We will play important fixtures in the league in addition to the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup.

“Afterward, we’ll begin our preparations for the Champions League. They will be two tough battles, but we’ll be ready.”
