Inter Milan have released an official statement confirming their striker Lautaro Martinez has suffered a muscle strain.

The 26-year-old left the pitch in pain in Wednesday’s Coppa Italia clash against Bologna. He left his place for Henrikh Mkhitaryan during extra time.

This rounded off an abysmal evening for both club and captain, one that saw him miss a spot kick and end up in a dramatic elimination after conceding two late goals.

On Friday, the Argentine showed up at the club’s medical facility to undergo some tests and the results have now come out.

The club revealed that Martinez has suffered a muscle strain in the adductors of his left thigh.

The Nerazzurri didn’t offer a timetable for his recovery. Instead, the statement only mentioned that the player’s condition will be re-evaluated in the next few days.

Lautaro Martinez underwent instrumental tests this morning at the Humanitas Clinical Institute in Rozzano,” reads Inter Milan’s statement via the club’s official website.

“The Nerazzurri attacker has suffered a strain to the muscle in his left thigh. His condition will be monitored over the coming days.”

This is certainly a blow for Simone Inzaghi who will have to cope without the services of his captain and main talisman.

Martinez leads the Serie A scoring charts with 15 goals from 16 Serie A appearances.

The World Cup winner was also one strike away from equaling Giuseppe Meazza’s tally for the number of strikes in a calendar year.

But with only two fixtures remaining, the Argentine might never get the chance.

The Nerazzurri will host Lecce this weekend before traveling to Genoa for their final match of the year.
