Inter Milan brought a bittersweet 2023 to a close with a hard-fought 1-1 Serie A draw away to Genoa yesterday evening.

Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica, via FCInterNews, sum up the mood as the Nerazzurri get ready to head into 2024.

Inter have certainly had a busy calendar year.

The Nerazzurri started things off by beating Napoli in Serie A.

That had made it briefly look like the Nerazzurri would be capable of keeping pace with the Partenopei in the Serie A title race.

That couldn’t have been further from the truth, though. The Nerazzurri’s erratic form in the league saw them finish far off in the distance from Napoli.

If that Serie A form was well below expectations, the same could not be said of Inter’s performances in cup competitions.

First, there was victory in last season’s Supercoppa Italiana. Inter beat AC Milan in the derby to lift the trophy.

Then, Inter also won the Coppa Italia. And at the climax of last season, the Nerazzurri came desperately close to winning the Champions League, falling to Manchester City in the final by a narrow 1-0 scoreline.

Inter Draw With Genoa To End Bittersweet 2023

After the Champions League final came a summer of major upheaval in the transfer market.

Twelve players left Inter. And twelve came in to replace them.

The new-look team have found the right balance.

Inter are currently top of the Serie A table, five points clear of Juventus for the time being.

But the draw against Genoa yesterday was a timely reminder that Inter must sustain a very high level for the rest of the season or else risk letting the Bianconeri in.

Meanwhile, Inter are in the Champions League knockouts. But they have crashed out of the Coppa Italia at the first time of asking.

It’s been a year of ups and downs for Inter. Now, they will aim to carry on the best parts of it in 2024, whilst avoiding some of the pitfalls.
