Inter Milan could decide to swoop for a veteran striker with experience in Serie A late in the January transfer window.
This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, who outline the sort of profile that the Nerazzurri could target to bolster their attack.
In the last few months, there has been a clear divide between Inter’s starting front two, and backup forwards.
Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram have certainly proven up to the task of leading the line.
But apart from a few positive moments here and there, Marko Arnautovic and Alexis Sanchez have struggled.
This has led to some suggestions that Inter could try to sign a striker this month.
The January transfer window is open for a few more weeks. There could be opportunities to bolster the attack.
But there are factors that would limit the kind of business that Inter could do this month.
Inter Could Target A Veteran Serie A Striker This Month
One obvious aspect that would make it tough for Inter to sign a striker during the January transfer window is the costs involved.
The Nerazzurri have already splashed the cash on wingback Tajon Buchanan this month.
There is little left over in the budget.
Another obstacle would be the fact that Inter have no remaining non-EU spots left in their squad after signing Buchanan.
And this would preclude a potential move for Porto’s Mehdi Taremi. The Iranian remains a major target for Inter for next summer, on a free transfer.
But a move for Taremi this month for a fee would not be possible, as the 31-year-old is a non-EU player.
However, Tuttosport reports, a move for a striker wouldn’t be impossible for Inter.
But it would only come later on in the window, likely in the final week.
Alexis Sanchez departing would certainly free up space on the wage bill. But the Chilean’s exit wouldn’t be strictly necessary.
Offloading midfielders Stefano Sensi and Lucien Agoume could well be sufficient.
Then, the question is what kind of profile Inter would go after.
And Tuttosport report that it would certainly have to be a player who is out of favour at their current club.
The Nerazzurri certainly wouldn’t be able to sign a striker who starts regularly for their current club.
But if there is a player who has plenty of experience in Serie A, whose club is willing to let go without a transfer fee before the transfer window slams shut, then Inter may sniff out an opportunity.
This could be similar to the Nerazzurri’s last-ditch signing of Felipe Caicedo from Genoa 24 months ago.
