Nerazzurri Vice-President Javier Zanetti feels that the Supercoppa Italiana is an important competition for Inter Milan.

The executive spoke to Italian news outlet Planetwin365, via FCInterNews, and stressed that the team will have to give their best in order to try and win the competition.

For the next week, Inter’s Serie A season will be on pause.

The Nerazzurri fly to Saudi Arabia today. There, they will take part in the Supercoppa Italiana.

Inter, as last season’s Coppa Italia winners, take on Serie A runners-up Lazio in the semifinal stage of the competition on Friday.

The winner of that match will meet either Napoli or Fiorentina in the final on Monday.

Inter have won the Supercoppa in each of the past two seasons. They beat Juventus in 2022 and then AC Milan last January.

But winning the Supercoppa will be tougher this time around. That’s due to the change in format with four teams vying for the trophy rather than just two.

Javier Zanetti: Supercoppa Italiana Important For Inter

Zanetti said of the Supercoppa that “It’s an important objective for us.”

“And we’ll have to give our best, because it’s a trophy that can enrich the history of whichever club wins it.”

Zanetti also looked back on some of the times that he won the Supercoppa with Inter during his time as a player for the club.

“All of the times that I won it came after very exciting matches,” the Vice-President and former Inter captain looked back.

“I remember the one in 2006,” he continued. “When we came back from 0-3 down to win 4-3.”

“And I can also remember the one in 2008, again against Roma. We won on penalties,” the Inter Vice-President recalled.

“I took the last penalty from eleven metres out,” the Argentine noted. “That’s still the only penalty I’ve ever taken in my career.”
