Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta feels that the new format of the Supercoppa Italiana is an “extra motivation” for the Nerazzurri.
Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, report the executive’s words. He notes that the expanded format offers both competitive and financial incentives.
Tomorrow, Inter kick off their Supercoppa Italiana.
It’s a competition that the Nerazzurri have won in each of the past two seasons. They beat Juventus in January of 2022, and then AC Milan last time around.
But the format for the Supercoppa has changed.
This time around there are four teams vying for it, with two semifinals and then a final.
Inter represent the Coppa Italia winners from last season, whilst Fiorentina were finalists.
Meanwhile, Napoli vie for the Supercoppa as last season’s Serie A champions. And Lazio – Inter’s opponents tomorrow – come into the competition as league runners-up.
The new format is similar to that of the Spanish Super Cup.
Inter CEO Marotta: Expanded Supercoppa Italiana Format “Extra Motivation”
Marotta said of being in Saudi Arabia for the Supercoppa that “We’ve found our surroundings to be pleasant.”
“The structures here are adequate,” he continued.
Marotta predicted that the Supercoppa “Should be a great spectacle.”
He noted that “This is the first experiment with a new format.”
“It is certainly an extra motivation,” the executive made clear.
“Both from a financial standpoint, as it allows for the teams to bring in extra money, and because it enhances the brand of our football product abroad.
The monetary prize for winning the Supercoppa this season would be around €8 million. This would be a major windfall for any team in Serie A.
“And then,” the Inter CEO continued, “we’ll have to evaluate in due course the repercussions that a tournament like this can have in terms of physical stress on the players.”
