Denzel Dumfries is finding himself with less and less playing time at Inter Milan as a possible summer departure from the club looms.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who note that the 27-year-old has not played a minute since the start of this month.

Dumfries was in Inter’s starting eleven for their Serie A match at home to Hellas Verona at the beginning of January.

That was the first start for the Dutchman after he had come back from a thigh problem.

Dumfries has been a regular starter for Inter for much of the time since his arrival in 2021.

But this season, some persistent fitness problems have often kept the former PSV wingback off the pitch.

And that has proven to be the case in the last few weeks as well.

After that match against, Dumfries has not played a single match for Inter.

Matteo Darmian has been the player who has started on the right flank in place of the Dutchman. Meanwhile, there is a sense that Tajon Buchanan will soon be ready to step in and do a job at right-wingback.

Denzel Dumfries Finding Playing Time Hard To Come By Amid Uncertain Future At Inter

There is no indication that Dumfries is being “frozen out” of the team at the moment.

The 27-year-old has had fitness issues throughout the season.

Therefore, Dumfries’s recent absences are almost certainly largely a matter of the player simply not being at his best.

And the reliable Darmian has held down the right-sided position in the team in his absence.

Plus, with Buchanan having had almost a month to settle in, the Canadian can also start adding to the squad depth in that position.

But Inter coach Simone Inzaghi will want Dumfries back at his best. Having the ability to rotate – particularly from the bench – will be crucial in the coming weeks’ intense fixture list.

However, beyond the end of the current season, the doubts are mounting.

The contract talks between Inter and Dumfries are currently at an impasse.

The Dutchman’s deal runs out at the end of June 2025.

Inter have offered around €4 million net per season on a contract extension. Dumfries and his representatives are seeking wages of around €5 million net per season.

If Dumfries does not sign a new deal, then Inter will certainly look to sell the Dutchman in the summer.

The Nerazzurri would have no intention of seeing the player leave on a free transfer twelve months later. So they would look to cash in while they can.

And there is no shortage of transfer interest in Dumfries.

Manchester United and Bayern Munich are among the 27-year-old’s most prominent suitors.

In the meantime, Inter and Dumfries will both have the same priority: for the Dutchman to get fit and start performing at his best.

But as far as the future goes, things have never been more uncertainty for Dumfries at Inter.
