Napoli Sporting Director Mauro Meluso feels that regardless of the Inter Milan links, Piotr Zielinski is still a professional.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN ahead of the Partenopei’s Serie A match against Lazio, via FCInterNews, the executive made clear that the Pole will continue to be important for the club as long as he wears the shirt.

It has become impossible to ignore the links between Zielinski and Inter.

The transfer rumours are not just some peripheral distraction for the 29-year-old.

With Zielinski’s contract just a few months away from expiring and no sign of an extension, it feels as though the atmosphere has the potential to become toxic.

Particularly if the former Udinese and Empoli midfielder were to join a direct rival in the Italian top flight like Inter.

This has even led to some rumours that Zielinski could be dropped from the Napoli squad.

However, Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri decided to include the Polish international in the starting eleven to face Lazio this evening.

And the Campanian club’s Sporting Director Meluso has made clear that even with all the transfer rumours and uncertainty about Zielinski’s future, he will still have a role to play.

Napoli Sporting Director: Inter Links Don’t Mean Piotr Zielinski Isn’t A Professional

Partenopei Sporting Director Meluso said of Zielinski that “Aside from the fact that his contract is expiring, he’s a professional.”

“We’re focusing on today’s match,” the executive continued.

He called the clash with Lazio “Very important to get us back on track in the hunt for Champions League football.”

“As far as everything else, we’re not talking much about that.”

“He remains an important player for us,” Meluso said of Zielinski.

“As long as he’s here in Naples he must make himself available to play for us.”

Zielinski’s contract with Napoli runs out at the end of June. He could leave the club after eight years.
