Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer has earned praise for his match-winning performance against Fiorentina.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, name the 35-year-old ex-Bayern Munich man as the Nerazzurri’s man of the match.

In the end, it was yet another clean sheet for Sommer in Serie A.

The Swiss international went an entire league match without having to pick the ball out of his own net for the thirteenth time since joining Inter last summer.

And on this occasion, no player was more decisive for the clean sheet than Sommer himself.

The veteran keeper had to make four saves in total.

These included a smart stop on a Giacomo Bonaventura effort.

But above all, it will be the save on a Nico Gonzalez penalty that Sommer’s performance is remembered for.

Yann Sommer Named As Inter MOTM In Serie A Win Vs Fiorentina

Sommer himself had been the one to concede the penalty that threatened Inter’s clean sheet and narrow lead in the second half of yesterday’s match.

The Swiss international punched the ball clear, but in the process caught the head of Viola striker M’Bala Nzola.

After a lengthy VAR check, referee Gianluca Aureliano pointed to the spot.

It was FIorentina’s star man Nico Gonzalez who stepped up to take the penalty.

In truth, the Argentine’s effort was a very tame one.

Gonzalez’s penalty was fairly central, and also not hit with a great degree of power.

But that should not take too much away from Sommer’s composure to react, time his dive down to his right, and keep hold of the ball rather than spilling it to the feet of a Fiorentina player.

The Gazzetta give Sommer a score of 7/10 in the player ratings for the match, and brand the keeper the best player on the night.

The newspaper also give a 7/10 score to Benjamin Pavard, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Lautaro Martinez.
