Inter Milan will be going all-out for a win in the Derby d’Italia this evening, whilst Juventus may not see a draw as a bad result.
This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who contrast the two teams’ approaches and motivations.
The last time Inter and Juventus met there was a certain sense that both teams had played within themselves.
Particularly from the Nerazzurri, it was not an emphatic display.
But more than two months have passed since then. And Inter have only grown in confidence.
Particularly after the Supercoppa Italiana, in which Inter put in one of their most dominant displays of the season against Lazio in the semifinal, there is great conviction to go “all-out.”
Inter and their coach Simone Inzaghi know from bitter experience the price they can pay for recklessness. Juventus have often taken great advantage of the counterattack in recent meetings.
But the Corriere report that Inzaghi does not want to play a “conservative” or “speculative” match.
With three points on offer, the coach knows the chance his team have to four points clear at the top of the table. And that would be with a game in hand to potentially make it seven.
A convincing victory this evening would put all of the momentum in the Nerazzurri’s sails in the title race.
Inter Going “All-Out” For Derby D’Italia Win – Juventus Happy With A Point?
On the other hand, the Corriere suggests, Juventus coach Max Allegri would not see a draw as a disappointing result the way that Inzaghi and Inter would.
With the gap at the top currently just one point, a draw would maintain the status quo.
And that status quo is one of pressure on the league leaders.
Allegri has occasionally goaded Inter in recent weeks with remarks about “cops and robbers.” The 56-year-old wants to position his young team as a threat undermining the “favourites.”
So as long as the situation remains as it does, Inter hold their breath knowing any slip-up could be capitalized on by the Bianconeri.
A draw would not change that. It would keep the pressure on Inter, who have the Champions League coming up, and a tough game in hand to make up against Atalanta.
Of course, Allegri would be overjoyed with a win.
But three points would perhaps not be as important for the Bianconeri coach’s vision as for Inzaghi’s.
