Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram has made a habit of forcing defenders into scoring own goals after yesterday’s match against Roma.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Thuram did get on the scoresheet yesterday.
It was the second match that the Frenchman has played against Roma. And it was the second time that he had found the back of the net against the Giallorossi.
Thuram’s goal was an important one.
It was Inter’s equalizer, scored just a couple minutes after the start of the second half and a perfect response to a rather subpar first period.
Thuram did not manage to score another goal to put Inter ahead.
But for the 26-year-old and his teammates, it didn’t matter too much.
Marcus Thuram Once Again Forces Own Goal Vs Roma
The scorer of the goal that proved to be Inter’s winner yesterday was Roma defender Angelino.
The Spanish former RB Leipzig and Galatasaray defender bundled the ball into his own net just a few minutes after Thuram had scored Inter’s equalizer.
But it was no unforced error from Angelino. Quite the opposite, in fact.
The reason that the defender had turned the ball past his own goalline was clear – Thuram was lurking right alongside him, and there was little else that he could realistically do.
It mirrored Inter’s winner against Juventus last weekend.
In that instance, Bianconeri defender Federico Gatti was Thuram’s victim.
In both instances, opposition defenders were well aware of the Frenchman’s pace, momentum, and ability to finish incisively.
So the defenders were absolutely desperate to get a touch on the ball. Even if it meant a strong risk of an embarrassing own goal.
From some angles. Angelino’s own goal looked very much like a Thuram goal.
Technically, it was not. It is the Roma defender who is credited with a goal that he’d really rather not be.
But as with the winner against Juventus, the goal belonged to Thuram just as much as if he had actually applied the finishing touch himself.
