Wingback Denzel Dumfries is pushing to start for Inter Milan against Atletico Madrid, whilst Tajon Buchanan could also make an impact.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

At the moment, Matteo Darmian is the favourite to start in Tuesday evening’s Champions League round of sixteen first leg at the San Siro.

The former Manchester United and Torino defender did not play on Friday against Salernitana.

Meanwhile, 27-year-old Dutch international Dumfries did play in that match. He started, and then saw out the full ninety minutes.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi appeared to have been resting Darmian.

The 34-year-old had started the six previous matches for Inter on the right flank. But the fact that he did not play against the Granata looked like a signal that Inzaghi wanted him fresh for Atletico.

However, at the same time, Dumfries has certainly given his coach something to think about.

By switching up his wingbacks against Salernitana, Inzaghi got a chance to see how a couple players who have not been starting matches recently are doing in terms of form.

And from Dumfries, the coach got a clear sign.

Despite having lacked some fitness for portions of the season, the 27-year-old appeared close to his best.

On both sides of the ball, Dumfries was energetic and incisive.

And according to the Corriere, the former PSG wingback could still give Inzaghi something to think about against Atletico.

Dumfries would offer more attacking threat compared to the experience and defensive solidity of Darmian.

Meanwhile, the fact that Buchanan made his Inter debut against Salernitana was no coincidence.

The Canadian had spent the past month and change settling in without getting on the pitch.

But now, Buchanan will certainly be ready to come on at some stage against Atletico.
