Wingbacks Matteo Darmian and Federico Dimarco will start for Inter Milan in Tuesday’s Champions League match against Atletico Madrid.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Against Salernitana on Friday, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi changed things up on the flanks.
On the right, it was Denzel Dumfries who came into the team for his first start in over a month.
The Dutchman saw out the entire match.
And on the left, Carlos Augusto started. The 25-year-old former Monza man also played the full ninety minutes, although he moved into defense for the closing stages.
Meanwhile, Tajon Buchanan was the player who replaced Augusto on the left flank following the Brazilian’s positional change.
That meant that both of Darmian and Dimarco played no part in Friday’s match.
Both of the Italian international pair got a relatively rare rest.
Matteo Darmian & Federico Dimarco To Start For Inter Vs Atletico Madrid
Inzaghi’s gambit to freshen things up in the wingback positions paid off against Salernitana.
Augusto and Dumfries were two of Inter’s outstanding players in the 4-0 rout of the relegation-battlers. The former assisted the Nerazzurri’s first two goals, whilst the latter scored the third.
But the fact that both Darmian and Dimarco played no part looked like a hint regarding the Inter coach’s intention for this Tuesday.
Normally, Inzaghi will substitute the wingbacks some time during the second half.
But that was not the case for Dumfries. And when Augusto slotted into the defense, it was Buchanan who came on for his first ever appearance in an Inter shirt.
Inzaghi kept both Darmian and Dimarco fresh.
The Italian duo have been the starters in a number of key matches recently. They started in wins against all of Lazio, Napoli, Juventus, and Roma.
And against Atletico in the Champions League round of sixteen first leg, they will also start.
