Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez feels that whilst a first leg advantage is important, the tie against Atletico Madrid is still in the balance.

Speaking to UEFATV after the Nerazzurri’s 1-0 victory in the Champions League, via FCInterNews, Martinez gave his immediate reaction.

Inter will have an advantage to protect when they travel to Madrid for the second leg of their Champions League tie next month.

The Nerazzurri were rewarded for a convincing performance with a 1-0 victory.

But the margin of victory quite literally couldn’t be any slimmer for Inter.

The one-goal margin is one that Atletico will know they can erase in an instance. And the clean sheet at home does not have quite the value that it would have with the away goals rule.

Inter also missed some chances to win by a more emphatic scoreline.

Captain Martinez was guilty of passing up a couple good opportunities. As was Marko Arnautovic, the scorer of what proved to be the winner on the night.

So these are certainly moments that Inter could come to regret.

But the team will do everything they can to make sure that’s not the case when they take on Atletico for a second time in three weeks.

Inter Captain Lautaro Martinez: Job’s Not Done Vs Atletico Madrid

After yesterday’s match, Martinez said that “Atletico played very well in the defensive phase.”

“They played with a lot of intensity, as we expected,” he continued.

“However, in the second half we kept hold of the ball more,” the Argentine said.

“And we were able to create more chances, which allowed us to score the goal for 1-0.”

“The result is important because it gives us an advantage,” Martinez said.

“But this does not mean that we can say that it’s done.”

The Inter captain added, “Now let’s go back to thinking about the league.”

“And then we can put our focus back on the Champions League, where we’ll try to play another great match.”
