Inter Milan wingback Carlos Augisto feels that Tuesday’s win over Atletico Madrid was important, though the margin could’ve been bigger.

The former Monza wingback spoke to Italian broadcaster SportItalia, via FCInter1908, after the Champions League round of sixteen first leg victory.

There is still a big job left for Inter to do in the second half of their round of sixteen tie against Atletico.

The Nerazzurri will have to travel to Madrid in three weeks’ time.

In the Spanish capital, Inter will know that they have just a slender advantage, having won Tuesday’s match by a 1-0 scoreline. And ninety minutes in which to hold on.

But that does not change the fact that the Nerazzurri got exactly the result they wanted on Tuesday.

In front of their fans, Inter made it nine wins from nine in 2024.

This was important for keeping the momentum going and building even greater confidence in the team.

It was also an important result in and of itself.

Slender or not, Inter take a concrete advantage into the second leg of their round of sixteen tie.

Carlos Augusto: Important Win Vs Atletico Madrid, But Could’ve Scored More Goals

Just as important as the fact that Inter won against Atletico was the manner in which they did so.

The Nerazzurri dominated the second half of the match in particular.

After taking time to settle in and find their rhythm against a strong Atletico team who did everything they could to disrupt their possession, Inter started to look like a well-oiled machine.

The Nerazzurri possession looked far more dangerous than that of the Clochoneros.

Inter were able to restrict the La Liga team to just seven shots. None of which forced a save out of Yann Sommer.

And at the other end, there were a number of good chances for Inter.

But that last fact is where the one real regret will undoubtedly be for the Nerazzurri.

Augusto and his teammates will know that they could have won by a 2-0 or 3-0 scoreline.

Of course, even then, the tie would hardly be over. Not least given the difficulty of playing the second leg away in the Spanish capital.

But a larger buffer would certainly have been helpful.

“We spoke before the match and we had to stay switched-on,” Augusto said after the match.

“There’s still the return leg to go. And we know that they’re a good team.”

“We approached the match well in front of our fans,” Augusto said.

“But there are still ninety minutes left to go.”

“Now we have to concentrated on the return leg,” the Brazilian added.

“We know that Champions League matches are decided by details,” he said. “And we know that we could have scored more goals.”

“The important thing this evening was to win,” Augusto concluded. “And so this was a very important win.”

And the former Monza wingback also commented on the goal from his former teammate Marko Arnautovic.

“He works hard in training,” Augusto said. “He deserved the goal.”
