Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is just one goal away from hitting the 100 mark in Serie A.

Yesterday’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, note the significant milestone that is just on the horizon for the 26-year-old.

This has been a season of numbers for Martinez in a goal.

Most importantly, there is the figure of 22. That is how many goals the Inter captain has scored up to this point in the season.

Twenty of those goals in Serie A.

That means that Martinez leads the way by a significant distance in the goalscoring charts for the Italian top flight.

And barring any truly unforeseen developments, this will be the third season in a row in which Martinez ends the campaign as Inter’s top goalscorer.

If the Argentine wasn’t always the biggest goal threat, he has found a lethal edge over time.

Now, Martinez doesn’t just score prolifically.

Consistency also marks the Nerazzurri captain’s goalscoring exploits.

There are no more goal streaks and droughts the way that there once had been. Now, Martinez just seems to pop up with a goal more often than not.

Lautaro Martinez On The Verge Of 100 Goals In Serie A

September 29th, 2018 was a significant date for Martinez.

That marked the first time that the Argentine found the back of the net in Serie A.

Martinez had joined Inter during the summer of 2018. But he didn’t become a regular starter, or a prolific goalscorer for the club right away.

On that September day, however, Martinez met a Dalbert cross to score against Cagliari.

It would prove to be only the first of many for Martinez.

Over the last six seasons, the Argentine has followed it up with 98 more goals.

The fact that Martinez has never been Inter’s regular first-choice penalty-taker has made that fact all the more impressive.

Martinez can score just about any type of goals.

The Inter captain can score from short-range or from well outside the box. He has the technique to execute a variety of finishes.

Martinez has the instincts to gamble and get himself on the end of tap-ins. And the Argentine may not be the tallest of strikers, but has a well-timed jump and accurate header which has gained him many aerial goals, including from set pieces.

All of this means that it shouldn’t be long before Martinez gets on the scoresheet in Serie A again.

And whenever that goal does arrive, it will mark a very significant milestone for the 26-year-old.
