Only Bayern Muncih striker Harry Kane has more league goals in a top five European league than Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Martinez may have missed one opportunity from the penalty spot against Atalanta on Wedensday. But it was no matter, as the Inter captain still added another goal to his tally.

Martinez’s stunning long-range effort meant that the Argentine is on 23 Serie A goals for the season. And 25 across all competitions.

That means that Martinez is well on track to finish the campaign as the Italian top flight’s top scorer.

And the Inter captain can even dream of chasing the all-time Serie A record. Currently, that stands at 36 goals in a single season – from Ciro Immobile and Gonzalo Higuain.

And perhaps Martinez could also be targeting not just an Italian, but a Europe-wide scoring high.

Currently, the player with the most league goals in one of Europe’s top five leagues is England captain Harry Kane, who has found the back of the net a total of 27 times for Bayern.

Kane has not just equalled his prolific totals from his time with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. He has taken them to new heights.

Therefore, there are naturally few players who could think of catching Kane at this stage.

But Martinez is the player with the best chance of it, seemingly.

The Argentine is just four goals away from Kane’s total. That is not that big of a margin considering the kind of form Martinez has been in all season long.

After all, Martinez has already scored four goals in just one match this season.

And the Argentine will be keen to make sure Kane feels him breathing down his neck for the rest of the campaign.
