Former Lazio goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani believes that Inter Milan’s special season shouldn’t be written off if they feel to beat Atletico Madrid.

Marchegiani gave his thoughts on Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews.

Inter are at a bit of a strange place in their season as mid-March and the final international break approaches.

In Serie A, the Nerazzurri appear to be marching to the title.

Barring any truly shocking drop-off in form, it is only a matter of when rather than if Inter secure the title.

In terms of other domestic competitions, Inter have already won the Supercoppa Italiana for the third season running.

But the Nerazzurri will not be doing the same in the Coppa Italia. They have already crashed out of that competition, losing to Bologna in the round of sixteen.

That leaves the Champions League.

Marchegiani: Don’t Write Off Special Inter Season If They Lose To Atletico

Inter have a 1-0 advantage in their Champions League round of sixteen tie against Atletico.

The Nerazzurri have every chance of reaching the quarterfinals of that competition. Then, they could start to dream of another run like last season, when they reached the final.

But finishing the job in Madrid on Wednesday won’t be easy.

And if Atletico were to turn it around, it would leave Inter in a bit of an odd position.

The Nerazzurri would still have work to do clinching the title. But their would be little real jeopardy or drama.

This was the sort of anticlimax that characterized the last few weeks of Napoli’s remarkable season last time around.

But Marchegiani cautions that this would be the wrong way of looking at it.

“I think that Inter will go through,” the former keeper said.

“But if it doesn’t happen – after all, they’re up against a strong team who are used to European knockout matches – please don’t make the mistake of writing off this season.”

“The season has been fantastic from them,” he said.

“In the Champions League, they could lose to Atletico – who have beaten Real Madrid twice this season, remember.”

“But still, it’s a brilliant season from them,” Marchegiani made clear.
