Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta is expecting “no problems” in contract extension talks with Nerazzurri captain Lautaro Martinez.

The executive spoke to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews, ahead of the team’s Champions League round of sixteen clash with Atletico Madrid. He also expressed the hope that President Steven Zhang can be back in Italy soon.

According to reports, Inter met with Martinez’s agent today to discuss the Argentine’s prospective contract extension.

The meeting did not result in a new deal. But the parties did work to get closer to one.

Inter have certainly made extending Martinez’s contract a priority for the coming months.

But so far, the 26-year-old has not signed a new deal.

This could lead to some worries that the talks are starting to stall.

Reports suggest that the problem is a financial one. Inter have yet to make an offer that is high enough to meet the demands of Martinez and his representatives.

The problem is certainly not any lack of desire to stay on the part of the player.

Martinez has always made clear that he hopes to remain at Inter well into the future.

And according to Nerazzurri CEO Marotta, there is little reason to worry.

Inter CEO Marotta: “No Problems” In Lautaro Martinez Contract Extension Talks

Marotta said of talks with Martinez that “At base, there’s the conviction on the part of both parties to continue the existing relationship.”

That’s a positive omen for the future,” he continued.

“Particularly considering that Lautaro has not just grown here, but is now our captain. He’s loved by the fans. He loves being in Milan and at Inter.”

Marotta gave a confident prediction, saying that “I don’t think that there will be any problems.”

“The only thing is that right now we’re giving priority to the imminent goals that we have in front of us,” the CEO explained why Inter have yet to reach an agreement with Martinez.

As far as when he expects Inter President Zhang back in the stands, Marotta said that “That’s a question I can’t give an answer.”

“I hope that it’s very soon,” the Nerazzurri CEO continued.

“We talk to Steven via video call very often, he stays close to us,” Marotta explained.

“We hope to have him with us soon, because his presence gives us an added value.”

“He’s a young man who lives the role of President and is heavily involved. So we’re very proud and happy to have him with us.”

As far as the team’s Champions League ambitions, Marotta said that “It’s logical that a top club with a lot of history like Inter should participate in competitions with the aim of going as far as possible.”

“This evening we have a tough opponent in front of us,” the CEO went on.

“And it’s in an environment that’s equally difficult,” he said of playing away at the Metropolitano.

“We know how they just keep winning at home,” Marotta said.

“But our players have prepared well for it, and I’m optimistic that we can have a good match and get a good result.”
