Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi has just one major selection doubt ahead of this evening’s match against Atletico Madrid.

Today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, identify the question of whether to start Denzel Dumfries or Matteo Darmian on the right as the coach’s one outstanding selection decision.

This season, there has not exactly been a clear first-choice starter on the right side of Inter’s formation.

That wingback role is arguably the position where there is the most doubt as far as who is in the strongest starting eleven.

Former PSV wingback Dumfries has frequently started. And the 27-year-old Dutch international certainly offers a significant attacking threat from the position.

But there have been fitness concerns about Dumfries throughout the season.

The Dutchman has not always looked at his best, as he’s dealt with a few muscle injuries.

This has meant that former Manchester United and Torino veteran Matteo Darmian has often started in the role.

The 34-year-old is extremely versatile. He can start at right-wingback, at left-wingback, or on the right of the back three.

And it has often been on the right flank that Darmian has played this season. He offers a bit more of a defensive presence and more experience than Dumfries.

Inzaghi Yet To Make Final Decision Whether To Start Dumfries Or Darmian Vs Atletico Madrid

In the first leg against Atletico last month, Darmian started. Then, Dumfries came off the bench in the second half.

That had been a difficult match for Darmian.

The Italian international had to defender Atletico wingback Samuel Lino, who was arguably the Spanish side’s most dangerous player on the night.

And the duel with Lino will undoubtedly be a factor in Inzaghi’s decision for this evening.

Meanwhile, there is the question of fitness and freshness.

Darmian played the full ninety minutes over the weekend. He started on the right against Bologna on Saturday, but moved to the left for the second half after Carlos Augusto came on.

On the other hand, Dumfries played only the second half of the Serie A clash.

That could be one point in the Dutchman’s favour.
