Goalkeeper Yann Sommer will miss out on Inter Milan’s Serie A match against Empoli due to an ankle injury.

This according to Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it. The Gazzetta report that the 35-year-old will undergo medical exams tomorrow, but that his absence in Inter’s first match back is virtually certain.

Sommer is currently back in Milan.

The former Bayern Munich keeper made an early return from the Switzerland international team training camp.

This followed an injury that the Inter keeper suffered during Switzerland’s friendly match against Denmark yesterday.

Sommer had started for Switzerland in that match. However, he had to come off as a substitute in the first half due to an injury.

The problem was with the Inter keeper’s ankle.

Sommer picked up the injury after the half-hour mark. He initially attempted to play through it, but needed to come off.

There was significant pain and swelling in Sommer’s ankle according to reports.

Yann Sommer Out For Inter Vs Empoli Serie A Clash

Sommer will undergo tests on the injury in his ankle with the Inter medical staff.

However, according to the Gazzetta, the Swiss will not undergo the tests today.

There is still some swelling in the area, and so the Nerazzurri medical staff will wait for the injury to start to heal a bit before they determine what the recovery timeline will look like.

Therefore, the Gazzetta report, Sommer will undergo the tests tomorrow.

These should shed light on when the former Bayern keeper will be able to return to the pitch.

But one thing is already clear, reports the Gazzetta.

Sommer will almost certainly not be ready to play in Inter’s first match back from the international break.

That will come against Empoli on April first.

It is unlikely that Sommer will be able to make a full recovery and get back to match fitness in time for that match.

This is particularly the case given that Inter will hardly want to rush their goalkeeper back to action.

Therefore, the earliest that Sommer could be back would be against Udinese the following weekend.

Meanwhile, the Gazzetta report, it will be Emil Audero who starts for Inter against Empoli.

The 27-year-old is currently at Inter on loan from Sampdoria. He has been Sommer’s backup this season.

Audero most recently started for the Nerazzurri against Lecce in Serie A. That came during a bout of influenza for Sommer.

Audero kept a clean sheet in that match, a 4-0 win for Inter.

Meanwhile, the former Juventus keeper has also started against Benfica in the Champions League and Bologna in the Coppa Italia.
