Yann Sommer and Inter Milan are pushing for the Serie A clean sheet record over the remaining nine matches of the season.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

This season, the bedrock of Inter’s success has been their strong defensive record.

The Nerazzurri have conceded a total of just fourteen goals in their first 31 matches of the campaign.

There have been just three Serie A teams to put two goals past Inter in a single matches. These have been Sassuolo, Bologna, and Roma.

That means that in eighteen of Inter’s matches in the league this season, they have prevented the opposition from scoring.

Yann Sommer & Inter Aim For Serie A Clean Sheet Record

At the moment, the record for most clean sheets in a single Serie A season is 21.

In the modern era, four teams have managed that – Juventus, Roma, and Lazio.

Bianconeri legend Gianluigi Buffon kept 21 clean sheets during the 2011-12 and 2015-16 seasons.

Meanwhile, Morgan De Sanctis did so with Roma in the 2013-14 campaign. And Lazio’s Ivan Provedel managed it last time out.

Inter can therefore equal that record with three more clean sheets from their final nine matches of the season – and surpass it with four.

And Sommer personally would need four and five respectively to equal or better the record.

The Swiss has missed one Serie A match this season. He was out for the away trip to Lecce last month. Emil Audero started that match, keeping a clean sheet.

Sommer is now pushing to be back in Inter’s starting eleven after suffering an ankle problem during the international break.

The Swiss international, and Inter, want to keep their defensive solidity during the run-in.

And the reward for both could be a place in the Serie A record books.
