Goalkeeper Yann Sommer believes that “the best is yet to come” for Inter Milan.

The 35-year-old spoke to Swiss broadcaster RSI Sport, via FCInterNews. He struck an optimistic tone as he talked about his ambitions with the Nerazzurri.

It would be fair to say that Sommer has enjoyed a positive first ever season playing for Inter.

The former Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach keeper has helped the Nerazzurri to get to the verge of clinching the Serie A title after joining last summer.

Inter could become champions in their next few matches.

That would be the second domestic league title that Sommer has won in two straight seasons. And coming in two different leagues, no less.

Sommer has been an important part of Inter’s outstanding Serie A season.

The Swiss international has proven the perfect replacement for Andre Onana in goal.

Sommer’s consistent presence and a string of great reaction saves over the course of the campaign have proven a major factor in Inter enjoying the best defensive record in Serie A.

The 35-year-old has kept a clean sheet more than he has not this campaign.

If there has been a big black mark on Sommer’s and Inter’s season, it has been the Champions League.

The Nerazzurri threw away qualification for the quarterfinals of that competition in the second leg of their round of sixteen tie against Atletico Madrid.

However, Sommer is on the whole optimistic. The Swiss believes that the team can do even bigger and better things.

Yann Sommer Optimistic: “The Best Is Yet To Come” For Inter Milan

Asked if he’s been surprised by how strong Inter have been this season, Sommer reipled “Surprised? I’d say no.”

“After all, this team already reached the Champions League final last season.”

“I had already seen this team. The quality, and the coaching ability of Simone Inzaghi were easy to see.”

“I couldn’t wait to start this new adventure,” Sommer said of joining Inter.

“But without stressing myself out too much doing it.”

“I told myself: Ok, I’m arriving at a top team in Italy and Europe. A team that’s very united and already knows each other very well.”

“For a goalkeeper, it’s great to come into a new situation and find that everyone has such a strong and close connection,” Sommer said.

“It’s wonderful to be at Inter,” the 35-year-old made clear.

As far as what Inter want to achieve over the remainder of this campaign, Sommer explained that “Clearly, our primary objective is to win the Scudetto.”

“Over the next few weeks, we’ll have some tough matches on the way.”

“We’ll try to take as many points as possible,” the Swiss international said. “But nobody is going to give us any gifts.”

“All the matches are and will be tricky,” the Inter keeper added.

“Then, we’ll see if it’s possible for us to set any records.”

“But first and foremost we have to keep our minds on the title.”

“Particularly because nothing’s actually been decided yet,” Sommer made clear. “We have to keep pushing.”

“To summarize,” the 35-year-old said. “The best is yet to come.”
