Versatile Inter Milan wingback Carlos Augusto is happy playing in defense if it means that he can help the team.

The 25-year-old spoke to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews, ahead of the Nerazzurri’s Serie A match away to Udinese.

Augusto is starting this evening’s match against Udinese. And he is doing so playing on the left of the back three.

That is not necessarily the position that Augusto is best-associated with.

Inter signed the Brazilian from Monza on the basis of his outstanding season playing on the left flank for the Brianzoli, where he held the width and provided a big attacking threat in the final third.

But this season, Augusto has also proven to be adept playing in a more defensive role.

Inter Wingback Carlos Augusto: Happy Playing In Defense

Augusto had first proven that he can do a job at centre-back against Napoli in December.

Even before then, there had occasionally been moments when the 25-year-old would shift into the backline temporarily.

But away to the Partenopei, Augusto played almost the entire match in the back three.

That was to cover for an injury crisis. Alessandro Bastoni was out for that match, whilst Stefan de Vrij also came off injured.

But Augusto did so well in the position, that he has also started a number of matches there since.

And this evening, Bastoni and de Vrij are both out with injury.

Therefore, Augusto is once again playing in the back three at the Blue Energy Stadium.

He said of the role that “I’d already played there for Monza.”

“I think that it’s good if I’m able to help the team in more than one position,” the Brazilian continued.

“I want to help the team, regardless of position I’m playing in. I’m doing well, and I want to keep going like this.”

Augusto added that “Our goal is the Scudetto. But we think one match at a time. We have to stay focused today, and then see what happens later.”

The 25-year-old gave his thoughts on this evening’s match, saying that “The most important thing will be how we start the match.”

“In the run-in of the season, every team has its own objectives.”

“We have to stay focused and get the three points.”
