Inter Milan centre-back Stefan de Vrij should make his return to the matchday squad in the Serie A contest against Cagliari.

The Nerazzurri will be looking to make another significant leap towards securing the Scudetto title when they host the Sardinians on Sunday night at San Siro. Simone Inzaghi’s men are only two wins away from mathematically sealing the title.

And according to Tuttosport via FcInterNews, this match should feature the return of de Vrij.

The defender sustained a knock during his time in the Netherlands camp last month. Therefore, he had to return to Milan prematurely to undergo the necessary tests.

The 32-year-old skipped Inter’s last two fixtures against Empoli and Udinese. Simone Inzaghi’s men prevailed on both occasions, albeit in dramatic fashion against the Zebrette.

The Turin-based newspaper explains that the Netherlands international has been working on personalized training.

Nevertheless, the experienced defender should rejoin his teammates in group training soon enough. This would pave the way for a call-up against Cagliari.

The former Lazio man has made 29 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring a single goal in the process.

But even if de Vrij were to return to the squad, he’s unlikely to feature in the starting lineup.

Inter Milan Defender Stefan De Vrij To Get A Call-up Vs Cagliari

As we reported earlier, Yann Bisseck is the favorite to replace the suspended Benjamin Pavard. The German would thus join Francesco Acerbi and Alessandro Bastoni at the back.

The latter is also making his return from injury, but he’s been ahead of the Dutchman in his recovery process. For instance, Bastoni has been training regularly with his teammates since Wednesday.

Finally, the source considers Alexis Sanchez as the favorite to replace the suspended Lautaro Martinez up front. The Chilean would thus link up with Marcus Thuram, leaving Marko Arnautovic on the bench.
