Former Nerazzurri President Ernesto Pellegrini feels that there are similarities between the current Inter Milan team and his 1988-89 vintage.

Pellegrini spoke to Milan-based newspaper Il Giornale in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, via FCInterNews.

Inter have won the Serie A title in dominant fashion this season.

The Nerazzurri did so with five matches to go, and clinched the title against city rivals AC Milan.

Moreover, Inter beat Torino yesterday, just to further underline their dominance in the Italian top flight.

Few Inter teams in history have had this kind of relentless consistency at the top.

One, however, was that of the 1988-89 campaign.

That Nerazzurri side won the title by a then-record points market.

Inter could boast multiple legendary players that season, such as Beppe Bergomi, Nicola Berti, Lothar Matthaus, and Andreas Brehme.

Naturally, comparisons to that team are always going to be difficult.

But this Inter – still on track to finish the season with over a hundred points – could merit that.

Pellegrini Compares Current Inter To 1988-89 Legends

Pellegrini was Inter President during the iconic 1988-89 season.

Of his memories of that team, the former President said that “I have a lot. And they’re all beautiful.”

“I often think back to the days of the Scudetto,” Pellegrini continued.

“It’s a dream when I’m able to hold it in my hands,” he went on.

“And then when I wake up it takes me a bit to realize that it really happened.”

Pellegrini recalled “The photo of the winning free kick against Napoli that won us the title.”

The former Inter President called this Inter and the 1988-89 legends “Two teams that are very similar.”

“I struggle to find differences between them,” he noted.

“Strong, solid, and attack-minded,” Pallegrini called both the 1988-89 Inter and this season’s.

“Today, as was the case with my Inter, the best thing to see is how united the dressing room is.”
