Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez feels that he and his teammates “didn’t play like ourselves” in their Serie A loss to AC Milan.
The Argentine reacted to the derby disappointment speaking to DAZN after the match, via FCInterNews. He stressed the need for the Nerazzurri to immediately turn the page.
Inter’s sequence of six wins in the derby came to a screeching halt.
The Nerazzurri lost 2-1 to city rivals AC Milan in this evening’s derby. That was the first time since September of 2022 that the Rossoneri have won in the fixture.
And in truth, Inter were second best to their city rivals for much of the match.
Milan looked the side with more energy and coordination, creating a number of dangerous chances between Christian Pulisic’s early opener and Matteo Gabbia’s late winning goal.
Inter found the back through Federico Dimarco off the back of a well-worked team goal.
But far too often the Nerazzurri allowed Milan to dictate the pace of proceedings.
Lautaro Martinez: “We Didn’t Play Like Inter” Vs AC Milan
Inter had not yet lost a match heading into this evening’s derby.
And Milan, by contrast, have had a very rocky start to the season.
But the derby is renowned for being a match where the form book goes out the window and the league table means nothing.
And so it proved this evening.
Milan saved their best performance under Paulo Fonseca to date for the occasion. Inter, on the other hand, looked a long way from their best form under SImone Inzaghi.
Nerazzurri captain Lautaro Martinez admitted that “Today we didn’t play the match we needed to play.”
“In the second half we did better. But we started out badly.”
“We didn’t play like ourselves,” Martinez said. “And when you drop the pace and move the ball too slowly, you can’t win matches in possession.”
The Inter captain added that “Even though we were always in the game, they scored a goal from a set piece at the end of the match.”
“Derbies are won on the details,” he said.
Martinez admitted that “We have to improve a lot.”
And the Inter captain believes that now the team must “Work the way we always have.”
“Just put our heads down and work. Me first of all.”
“Now we’ll focus on the next match, because we have to get back to winning,” Martinez said.
