Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is putting in extra work to regain top physical condition after a turgid start to the season.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
There is no hiding the fact that Inter captain Martinez has had a poor start to the season.
The Argentine did get his first assist of the campaign against AC Milan in the derby on Sunday.
That was a glimpse of what Martinez is capable of, with his vision and footwork evident as he found a bit of space between the lines to operate in to play the ball to Federico Dimarco for Inter’s first half goal.
But moments like that have been truly few and far between from the Nerazzurri captain.
The reason has seemed clear. There has been a lack of sharpness and physical dynamism from Martinez.
The 27-year-old has looked toothless in the penalty area, a sharp contrast from last season.
Martinez has struggled to free himself from the defender marking him in Inter’s matches. He hasn’t been the kind of presence he is at his best leading the Nerazzurri line.
Inter Captain Lautaro Martinez Working Extra To Recover Top Physical Condition
If there is good news regarding Martinez’s form, it is that there is an obvious explanation.
Martinez has never really been able to get properly fit for this season.
The Argentine had a long summer with his national team at the Copa America.
This meant that Martinez was only able to return to training for Inter a week before the Serie A season started.
Without sufficient rest and a proper preseason, the 27-year-old has shown fatigue.
Inter and Martinez are confident that the captain can return to his best. Both in terms of goals and overall contribution to the team.
But that will require greater fitness.
And according to the Gazzetta, Martinez is putting extra work in in training.
The Argentine has a personalized program to get him to his best condition as soon as possible.
