Rather than missing his old strike partner Romelu Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez has found even better form playing with Marcus Thuram.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Martinez first broke into the Inter starting eleven as a strike partner to Lukaku.

The Belgian was the player who the Nerazzurri spent big money to bring in from Manchester United.

But Inter needed to get the best out of Lukaku.

And while there were other attackers in the squad at the time such as Alexis Sanchez and Matteo Politano, it was Martinez who turned out to be the most natural foil for him.

Martinez played a role in allowing Lukaku to become Inter’s star man.

And going in the other direction, the Belgian’s presence gave Martinez the space to score regularly himself.

In 2021, Lukaku left Inter. And over the next couple of seasons, Martinez formed a new strike partnership with Edin Dzeko.

Even after Lukaku returned for a season on loan, the Argentine was building a strong understanding with the veteran former Roma and Manchester City striker.

Not Missing Lukaku – Lautaro Finds Best Form With Thuram

In the summer of 2023, Inter signed Marcus Thuram on a free transfer.

And the Frenchman did not take long to click with Martinez – now Inter’s captain.

Rather than Martinez being the player who facilitates the big name signing’s best goalscoring form, it has been Thuram who has been helping his teammate score more prolifically than ever.

Martinez has found the back of the net 27 times in 44 appearances alongside Thuram.

But that’s not to say that Thuram is just there to prop up Martinez.

The pair’s strong partnership has also seen the Frenchman score many big goals.

So far this season Thuram has scored seven goals. He is actually Inter’s top scorer at this stage.

Tomorrow, Martinez will come face-to-face with Lukaku for the third time – the Belgian had been at Roma last season.

But Inter’s captain won’t be missing his old strike partnership too much.
