Former Nerazzurri and Fiorentina midfielder Borja Valero feels Inter Milan are the “team to beat” in Serie A, even not at their best.
Valero spoke to Cronache di Spogliatoio, via FCInterNews, He also gave praise for Nerazzurri midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu.
Last season, Inter did not just win the Serie A title. They did so in dominant fashion.
The Nerazzurri won the title by a margin of nearly twenty points. This was a similar story to Napoli’s rampage to the title in the previous campaign.
This season looks like it will be a very different story.
There are currently a whopping six teams within a margin of just two points at the top of the table.
Clearly, Inter have not been able to run away at the top early on this time around.
Borja Valero: “Inter Not At Their Best, But Still The Team To Beat In Serie A”
Former Inter, Fiorentina, and Villarreal midfielder Valero said that “Something has definitely changed” in this Nerazzurri side.
“They’ve added some players, for example.”
Valero argued that “Inter’s sporting directors are ready to seize the player and signed some players, not all of them necessarily big names.”
“Everyone’s had to adapt to a team that’s been playing together for years,” he said.
“And with a well-defined style.”
“It takes some time for the squad together. But this Inter have a really strong squad.”
“We haven’t seen the best version of them, but I think they’re the team to beat,” Valero said of Inter.
Valero also gave his thoughts on the performances of Hakan Calhanoglu in holding midfield for Inter.
“I think Calhanoglu was fortunate to find himself in this position,” he said.
“And that it took him up another gear.”
“He was a more attack-minded player. But then he found himself playing in front of the defense, and at that level it’s not easy to do that.”
“He’s one of the best in the world in that position,” Valero said of Calhanoglu.
“And it’s evident, above all when he’s absent.”
Valero said Calhanoglu is “decisive in this team.”
“Even if Asllani is doing a great job in his absence. But they have different characteristics.”
