Tomorrow’s Serie A clash with Hellas Verona will be a big test of Inter Milan’s “dependence” on midfielder Hakan Calhanglu.

One thing that looks certain is that 30-year-old former AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Calhanoglu will not be in the Inter starting eleven for tomorrow evening’s match against Verona.

The Turkish international had an injury scare during the international break.

Medical tests yesterday confirmed that Calhanoglu had not suffered a serious injury.

However, there are still very much fitness confirms about the 30-year-old.

Calhanoglu is back in training. But he will be, at the most, ready to start on the bench tomorrow evening.

Therefore, Kristjan Asllani will start tomorrow’s match in holding midfield.

Coping without Calhanoglu is one of the big tactical puzzles for Inter.

The Turkish international is a pivotal player in every sense for the Nerazzurri in his role at the base of the midfield trio.

Last season, there was arguably no player more irreplaceable for Inter, in terms of the drop-off between matches in which he was or was not on the pitch.

Calhanoglu has a backup in the Inter squad in the form of Asllani. However, the Albanian is still 22 years of age and has yet to fully convince as an understudy.

Before the international break, Asllani was also unavailable due to an injury concern.

Therefore, the likes of Nicolo Barella and Piotr Zielinski started matches in holding midfield.

Aside from a wild 4-4 Serie draw with Juventus, Inter won the matches in which Calhanoglu was out.

But there were cracks on show in the team’s performances without Calhanoglu in the control room.

Tomorrow, Asllani will have the chance to prove that he can fill the 30-year-old’s shoes.
